Online child safety initiatives

A big topic of discussion lately is the increasingly large influence media of all kinds can have in the lives of children and teens. Last week I participated in a conference in New York about this important issue, sponsored by CommonSense Media and The Aspen Institute together with several organizations that have a stake in child safety. (Here are videos of the speakers.)

Where the Women Are Online

Ever go to a bar and say, "What a sausage party"?

Internet dating sites can be the same way. But a Hitwise report based on Internet visits suggests there are a few online dating destinations with way more women.
Still, among more widely trafficked sites, eHarmony has a far higher ratio of women to men, with 68.6 percent of visits coming from women. “It’s a boon for men,” LeeAnn Prescott, research director for Hitwise, said of eHarmony.

What else are women attracted to? They appear to be into sites for local hookups, Catholic dates, Latin men, and sugar daddies. That’s judging by the popularity of such sites as LocalHookUpz, 69.2 percent female visited, CatholicMatch.com, 72 percent, LatinAmericanCupid.com, 72.9 percent, and Sugar Daddie, 68.3 percent. Sugar Daddie’s web site boasts a service for millionaires, CEOs, lawyers, and benefactors.

Inside MySpace.com

Booming traffic demands put a constant stress on the social network's computing infrastructure. Yet, MySpace developers have repeatedly redesigned the Web site software, database and storage systems in an attempt to keep pace with exploding growth - the site now handles almost 40 billion page views a month. Most corporate Web sites will never have to bear more than a small fraction of the traffic MySpace handles, but anyone seeking to reach the mass market online can learn from its experience.

Looking for love with a background check

Dating sites have been slow to adopt safety-filtering measures; few dating sites conduct their own background checks on members and only one seeks to verify marital status.
Nearly 60 percent of Internet users said they think a lot of online daters lie about their marital status, according to Pew Internet & American Life Project study last year.
In the past decade, sites such as Yahoo Personals, Match.com and eHarmony helped make Web-based courtship mainstream for 10 million current daters. But some seasoned veterans say the thrill of using the Internet’s power to find soul mates has given way to caution. Singles now draw on a growing arsenal of security and research tools — from services that verify identity and background to companies that provide temporary phone numbers as a barrier to stalkers. Sites like DontDateHimGirl.com allow scorned lovers to warn others away from their bad dates.
