10 things dating sites don't want you to know (and how to get around them)
Now that online dating has hit the mainstream, daters are beginning to see beyond the marketing hype and scare-lore. First there was the initial worry: is it safe? Does it really work? Then came the honeymoon period where everything was beautiful and so much better than “traditional” dating. At last, we’re now settling into our long-term adult relationship and seeing our new partner for what it is, pros and cons included. Yes, ladies and gentlemen, it seems online dating has finally grown up.Here is a list of common problems often left out of PR pieces and marketing blurb. Online dating may not be perfect, but the pitfalls are much easier to deal with when you know what they are and what to do about them.
1. Uninterrupted membership surprise
2. More men than women use dating sites
3. Sometimes people lie
4. Online dating is a commitment. It’s not easy.
5. Some people are at an obvious disadvantage online
6. Background checks are no guarantee of safety
7. Free sites sometimes sell details on
8. Some sites are just not going to have the right people for you
9. Many features are not really necessary
10. Online dating isn’t for everyone

10 Winning Profile Tips
By Liz H. Kelly
10 winning profile tips:
- Write a unique and friendly introductory line: "Looking for hiking partner" or "Seeking a Shipmate for Sailing and More"
- Post at least two current photos: Photos significantly increase responses! Try at least one close-up and one full-body shot for the best results.
- Use a positive tone: I love to learn and meet new people. Life is an adventure and I would like to share it with someone special.
- Keep it simple: Keep your descriptions light and avoid demanding checklists in your essays. Try listing only three things you desire in a mate.
- Write short essays versus a book: four or five sentences is a good goal. Save the details for your dates.
- Add a little humor: I can laugh at my mistakes. Are you a Letterman or Leno fan?
- Include a fun hobby note: I need someone to distract me from the piano. I love to travel and tend to take too many photographs.
- Add your marketing pitch: What makes you unique? Try listing only three things and make them catchy (everyone is smart, outgoing, and fun - how are you different?)
- Show interest in the other party: Enough about me…tell me more about you.
- Be confident versus boastful: When you show confidence in being you, it is the biggest turn-on. The trick is not to be boastful in your delivery.

On Niche Dating Sites, Many More Women
Very interesting statistics:
During the week of Feb. 5, men and women visited online dating Web sites in nearly equal numbers, according to Hitwise, which measures online traffic. And to look at the 10 most popular sites not directed toward gay people, you might think that every dating site on the Internet was rigorously gender-balanced. All but one of the 10 largest sites came within 10 percentage points of being evenly split.
But among the smaller dating Web sites, many were drastically skewed. SeniorPeopleMeet, the 41st most popular site, had 80.8 percent women. BBW Datefinder, for “big beautiful women and admirers,” was No. 63, and had 76.3 percent women; and Catholic Match, No. 81, had 72 percent.
“It is a problem for them,” said Bill Tancer, general manager of global research at Hitwise. “It’s like any market; you want an equal number of buyers and sellers.”
But Greg Waldorf, the chief executive of eHarmony, the sixth most popular site and one with 68.6 percent women visitors, begged to differ. “If you asked me would I rather have more women or men, I’d rather have more women. If you have a good healthy population of women, I think men are attracted to that.”

Music Widgets for MySpace, Blogs
eSnips also announced 12 new music communities - Electronic, Hindi, Reggae, Metal, Gothic/Industrial, Hip-Hop/Rap, Elvis, Jazz, and Blues. Clearly, those continue eSnips’ strategy of rolling out niche “microportals” on certain topics. Additionally, they’re increasing the free storage to users from 1 GB to 5 GB and allowing users to email their favorite songs to each other in customizable, animated email messages (sounds like Bebo Mail Skins and Gigya, but the site is suffering some downtime that makes testing difficult).
eSnips is like Photobucket meets YouTube meets Webshots and everything else in between. The model works, with users hosting and syndicating their media all over the web. At least for now, eSnips seems to be less reliant on copyrighted media than its competitors (YouTube, Imeem etc), and perhaps less dependent on the social networks for traffic.
